On an afternoon thirteen years ago, Deacon Bill Toller and a group of parishioners made 25 sandwiches to distribute to people living on the streets of Springfield, MA. They quickly realized the need was much greater, and now they provide 400 sandwiches a week to the hungry and those experiencing homeless. In addition to the sandwiches, Deacon Bill and his parishioners provide clothing to needy residents.
Saint Basil the Great said, “The bread in your cupboard belongs to the hungry; the coat unused in your closet belongs to the one who needs it; the shoes rotting in your closet belong to the one who has no shoes; the money which you hoard up belongs to the poor.” Deacon Bill and the folks from Holy Cross Parish in Springfield are truly heeding the call to give without cost and love Jesus in the poor.
