Every year there are thousands of dogs in shelters waiting to be adopted. Whilst it can be a lonely time as they await the forever homes, one particular lady has found a heart-warming way to use her talents to provide a little extra comfort to these animals in need.

An enthusiastic 89-year-old by the name of Maisie Green has managed to knit over 450 blankets and sweaters for dogs at the Dogs Trust Basildon shelter, helping the dogs keep warm during the cold nights they spend in kennels.

The kind-hearted senior typically donates blankets, sweaters, and coats at least three times a year to the shelter. And her family even helps out where they can, driving her to the shelter so she can hand-deliver her amazing creations. Dogs like “Daniel the Spaniel” have been among the lucky recipients of knitted items donated to Dogs Trust over the years.

Green feels that knitting provides her with a purpose as well as a way to give back to her community. She heard about the initiative through the Dogs Trust “Hope Project” which called for nifty knitters like Green to contribute home-made dog coats to — to add a little festive warmth for dog owners who are homeless or in temporary housing during the winter months.

Dogs Trust is one of the U.K.’s largest dog rescue organizations and offers many ways for volunteers to get involved in helping to provide care to over 16,000 abandoned and stray dogs every year. Green’s story is a great example of how anyone can give back to their community, dog shelters are always in need of a helping hand especially when they look this snuggly and comfy.

Maisie is a such a generous woman who has helped make life a little bit easier for shelter dogs in England. If you want to learn more about Dogs Trust, check out their Facebook page.
