Durham police say a Toronto man is facing a slew of charges related to human trafficking after he allegedly tried to fly out of Ontario with a 19-year-old victim.
Officers were conducting a proactive investigation on Tuesday when they found the woman, who said she was being forced to work in the sex trade.
She also told them that she was being moved to different hotels across Ontario and all of her money was being taken.
Investigators also found the suspect nearby, but he took off on foot.
On Thursday, Sydney Bunkuna, 22, of Toronto, was arrested without incident at Pearson Airport. Investigators say he was trying to leave the province with the 19-year-old.
Bunkuna has ties to Hamilton, Barrie, Toronto and Peel Region. Officers say he met the victim through a dating app.
He’s charged with trafficking person over 18, material benefit from trafficking in person over 18, procuring-recruit person to provide sexual services, procuring-exercise control, obtain sexual services for consideration, advertising sexual services and material benefit from sexual services.
Bunkuna’s photo has been released and police want to ensure there are no other victims.
