Duluth City Council to consider CARES Act dollars for long term warming center and hygiene facility for the homeless

DULUTH, MN — At Monday’s city council meeting, councilors will consider allocating federal CARES Act dollars and other funding to establish a long term warming center and hygiene facility in the city’s West side.

St. Louis County reported an 18-percent increase in people experiencing homelessness from July 2019 to July 2020.

Councilors Renee Van Nett and Roz Randorf introduced the idea.

They say the pandemic has disproportionally impacted the area’s homeless population.

Still early in the planning stages, no price tag is available, and an exact location is still up in the air. However, the Lincoln Park Community Center is being discussed.
