Fire at Baghdad women's shelter kills nine

(4 Jan 2019) Nine people were killed on Friday after a fire at a women’s shelter in Baghdad.
Police said it started in the shelter’s kitchen after residents got into a fight.
Two women died from stab wounds and seven were killed in the blaze.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Jihad of Baghdad Police suggested it was “group suicide” because of what he described as the deteriorating mental state of the women.
Twenty-two people were injured.
The shelter houses homeless women and those with children born out of wedlock.
