A former Oregon elementary school teacher has admitted sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl he met on social media, federal prosecutors said.
William Hamann, 38, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of sex trafficking of a child for paying the teen for oral sex, which he recorded during encounters between 2018 and July 2019, according to the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon.
Hamann previously taught at Spring Creek Elementary in Eugene, where he also operated a haunted house in October 2018, The Oregonian reported.
Hamann, of Creswell, taught first-graders at the school, according to the Register-Guard.
The victim, who was not one of Hamann’s students, was 15 when Hamann first met her. He was arrested by Eugene police and FBI agents in July 2019 when he went to meet the girl for a fourth time, federal prosecutors said.
“Agents searched his mobile phone and found a recording of one of the sex acts,” federal prosecutors said in a statement Tuesday. “Hamman used social media to arrange the meetings with the minor.”
Eugene police said at the time of Hamman’s arrest there was no indication he victimized any students at his school, KCBY reported.
Prosecutors are seeking more than 13 years in federal prison for Hamman, who is also facing state charges in Lane County of sodomy and sex abuse. The US Attorney’s Office will recommend that a 20-month prison term on those allegations be served consecutively when he’s sentenced on March 1, federal prosecutors said.
Hamann has also agreed to pay an unspecified amount of restitution to his victim as part of a plea agreement.
