The almost 2-hour long programme showcases the choir presenting a Michael Jackson Medley which includes: Rock With You , Say Say Say, Got To Be There, I’ll Be There, Thriller, Man in the Mirror and We are the World; a ‘Bee Gees Medley’ which includes Night Fever, I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You, Words, Stayin’ Alive, How Deep Is your Love, I Started a Joke and also a ‘Beatles Medley’ with Day Tripper, A Hard Day’s Night, Can’t Buy Me Love, Eleanor Rigby, Ticket to Ride, Let It Be, She Loves You, All My Loving, Yesterday, The Long and Winding Road, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band, All You Need is Love, Michelle, I Want to Hold your Hand and Hey Jude. In addition, the line-up also has the harmonious One Voice from Barry Manilow and the ethereal sounds of Enya’s May It Be.
The audience can also look forward to He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother; Lean On Me; You Are So Beautiful / Wind Beneath My Wings medley and Uniquely You, a song written by Philharmonic Society of Selangor alumnae Ken Low, who also composed the musical “Chang & Eng”. Ken unfortunately passed away last year. These selections will be presented by solo singers or in smaller groups of members. Backing-up the concert will be a 5 piece band lead by Nish Tham who has worked with the choir on numerous previous concerts.
Cheryl Teh, Choir Director and Chairperson of The Phil said, “This is our first concert for the year and needless to say we are thrilled about it. We had a zealous membership drive in January and since then our numbers have doubled. Total membership stands at over 200 currently and about 70% are active members, singing regularly in the choir and shows. Members, who are all volunteers, have been working very hard for a few months now to give audience the kind of show that The Phil is known for.”
As a community based society, apart from promoting the love of music in the community, one of The Phil’s other main objectives is to contribute to charitable organisations within the community. Over the past half century, proceeds from productions have been donated to many charitable organisations around Malaysia. This year The Phil works together with All Women’s Action Society (AWAM), the SIC–PIHD Children Learning Centre (For the Poor) and Hospis Malaysia among others.
Teh adds, “The concert also kick starts a season filled with exciting developments including the choir’s maiden foray across the seas to represent Malaysia at the Perth-Bunbury International Spring Choral Festival in September 2011”.
