High school students make 3,000 sandwiches for homeless

“There may be less opportunities, but that’s what makes things like this even more important, you know?” Inouye said.

This was an effort by Inouye and her classmates to help Allen Law — better known as the Minneapolis Sandwich Man.

Even dealing with health concerns this year surrounding cancer, and for more than 50 years, Law has been helping the homeless population night after night, handing out 850,000 sandwiches in 2019.

With the help of Cub Foods, GirlOnward and community members, this effort was able to produce 3,000 sandwiches — and likely fill those volunteering hours.

“When I hear about this, I have to meet the person,” Law said as he picked up the meals from Inouye.

“If it weren’t for all the volunteers, like this wonderful lady, I wouldn’t have handed out 850,000 sandwiches last year,” he added.

This year has been a bit different for Law due to COVID-19 and more focus on his health. But still, he has hope thanks to Inouye and her classmates that he’ll be able to help those in need through what’s expected to be a long winter.
