Michael Mearan should not be permitted to defend himself, prosecutors say

Prosecutors say Portsmouth attorney and former city councilman Michael Mearan’s request to represent himself against sex trafficking charges is a “further attempt to manipulate and intimidate” his alleged victims, according to new documents filed Wednesday.

Mearan’s previously alleged acts of manipulation and intimidation were outlined in court documents filed earlier this month. The documents say Mearan made women “crawl like dogs,” demeaned them, verbally abused them and made one woman believe “she would end up dead if she did not comply with (Mearan’s) requests.”
