One of the clients at a Project Roomkey project at the Lincoln Plaza Hotel in Monterey Park has tested positive for coronavirus and as a result those housed at the site have been quarantined, according to an official from Union Station Housing Services.
The unnamed individual tested positive about a week ago, Dana Bean, senior director of development and communications for the agency, said.
“We did contact tracing and it was determined that person had no close contact because they isolated on an overnight shift,” Bean said.
“Now, we know they didn’t expose anyone,” she said. “But purely as a precaution because we work with a vulnerable population we are quarantining.”
The hotel has been used as a shelter since July, initially housing about 200 people. The number is down because many have been moved into permanent housing, Bean said. The plan is to close down the shelter by January, she added,
In an emailed statement, Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis said the shelter has been a success.
‘”The Project Roomkey site at the Lincoln Plaza Hotel in Monterey Park has saved lives by protecting and sheltering people experiencing homelessness, including those with underlying health conditions, to minimize their exposure to COVID-19,” Solis wrote.
Project Roomkey is an L.A. County initiative to house homeless while reducing the spread of the new coronavirus, by renting hotels and motels, primarily Motel 6’s. The county also has expanded into a new program, called Project Homekey where it is purchasing hotels, for permanent use as shelters.
It also faced opposition from Norwalk but a judge blocked the city from enforcing its temporary ban on motels and hotels renting out space to homeless people without prior city approval.
