Stockton residents to decide on next mayor


Stockton residents will decide on their next mayor during the November 2020 general election.The two men running for mayor present a contrast of styles and experience. But both candidates share one thing in common — they are young and in their 30s.Mayor Michael Tubbs, who is a Democrat, is facing U.S. Marine Kevin Lincoln, who is a Republican, in the race to lead Stockton. Tubbs: Tubbs said finding affordable housing is something he’s actively working for in the city.“In three short years, I’ve been able to secure over $10 million from the governor and the state budget to address the issue in Stockton,” Tubbs said.Tubbs started a universal basic income program, which helps 125 low-income families by giving them $500 a month.“What we see is that people are spending money the way you and I, and those watching, spend money — on food, on their kids, on utilities,” Tubbs said.He said the money comes from private foundations and not from taxpayers.Lincoln: Lincoln said he has a plan to address homelessness.“It’s a very comprehensive plan that addresses substance abuse, mental health issues that our homeless population deals with and it also addresses those that have been plagued by homelessness that are genuinely on tough times,” Lincoln said.Lincoln said he is critical of Tubbs’ initiatives and because they don’t help residents.“You’ve got Advance Peace. Many people refer to it as cash for criminals here in Stockton,” Lincoln said. “And you have Stockton Scholars.
