On August 24, 2009, 18 month-old Ratnesh Devi was suddenly struck with a high fever. He began to show symptoms of polio despite receiving his scheduled vaccinations. Many children, due to malnutrition or diarrhea, are unable to build an immunity to polio despite repeated vaccine doses.
