UMAC Origins: Conversation with Peter B. Tirrell

In 2021, UMAC celebrates its 20 years. The UMAC ORIGINS 2001-2021 Program comprises a series of initiatives aimed at reflecting about the past and future of university museums and collections.

Andrew Simpson, UMAC Vice-Chair (Australia) talks with Peter B. Tirrell, who was Deputy Director of the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History, University of Oklahoma (USA) and President for 6 years of the ACUMG, Association of College and University Museums and Galleries (ancestor of the present AAMG). He was in the first UMAC Board, he developed UMAC’s first Strategic Plan and organised the III UMAC Annual Conference in Norman, Oklahoma.
They talk about natural history museums, the role of philanthropy shaping art and natural history museums in US universities, the dynamics of university collecting, differences between art and science museums in the US, the pre-history of UMAC of course, and so much more.
